In a bid to bolster its reputation, the government has proposed a controversial weight loss medication, called Orlistat, in a bid to curb its misuse. The proposal, which is being put before the committee, will be called into question on Tuesday.
The committee, led by the former president of the British Association for the Advancement of Health, Dr Jeanine Baker, said it had been urged by the industry to find a way to curb the misuse of Orlistat.
The committee will hear arguments at its meeting on Wednesday to decide if it could recommend a possible change.
Orlistat is known to have the potential for abuse and it is not known whether it could be taken by pregnant women.
Dr Baker, the chair of the committee, said: “Orlistat is a prescription drug that has been used for many years. It is not a controlled substance.
“It is not the same as prescription drugs such as phenylketonurics or insulin. It is not a controlled substance.”
But, he added, “If we were to recommend a change to Orlistat, we would expect a significant improvement in the situation.”
In a statement, the committee said: “The use of Orlistat in pregnant women has been found to be safe and effective in women who are breastfeeding.
“However, this has not been the case in the study of the drug.”
“We will not be making any decisions about this matter until we have found a solution to the problem,” the company said in a statement.
The company, which has a £2.7bn market in the UK and is set to lose its licence to manufacture Orlistat, said it was “committed to make the best of the current situation” for the UK.
The UK-based drug giant Pfizer has a licence to produce the drug for 120 months.A spokesperson for Pfizer said: “Pfizer has launched the Orlistat, a prescription drug for people with overweight or obese adults.
